Water Softeners and Filtration in Dallas, TX
Dallas tap water comes from Dallas Water Utilities. The city calls it hard. It carries chloramine, and its 2025 report shows very little manganese.

The 2023 English and 2025 Spanish Dallas water quality reports do not list a hardness figure, but a December 2023 city memo to a council committee answered the question directly: "Do we have hard water? Yes."
Hardness
7.0 to 9.1grains per gallon (approx.)
120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate, 2023
Chloramine
2.97ppm average, total chlorine residual
2.75 to 3.18 ppm, 2025
Hard by the City's Own Answer
The memo gives 120 to 155 mg/L as calcium carbonate. At the Water Quality Association's 17.1 ppm per grain, that converts to about 7.0 to 9.1 grains per gallon, and the association treats anything from 7 to 10.5 grains as hard. The memo's own table puts 121 to 180 in the hard band, so nearly all of Dallas's 120 to 155 range sits there.
Why Dallas Uses Chloramine
In the department's words: "We use chloramine instead of chlorine to protect the health and safety of our citizens." Its 2025 total chlorine residual averaged 2.97 ppm and stayed between 2.75 and 3.18, under the 4 ppm maximum residual disinfectant level. Dallas is far from alone: the EPA says more than one in five Americans uses drinking water treated with chloramines.
Manganese, Clarity and Taste
Manganese averaged 2.27 parts per billion in 2025, against an EPA secondary guideline of 50. Turbidity peaked at 0.16 NTU in 2025. To control offensive tastes and odors, the department treats with activated carbon.
The Only Way to Know Your Number
Citywide numbers are not readings from your faucet. We come to your Dallas home and test the tap itself for hardness, chlorine, iron and sediment at no cost, and the recommendation that follows comes with no sales pressure.

What We Install in Dallas
The test result decides which of these fits your house.
Water Softeners
Whole-home softening stops scale on the water heater, dishwasher and fixtures and gives soft water for laundry and skin.
Whole-Home Filtration
A filter on the main line takes iron and sediment out of the water for the whole house.
Drinking Water Systems
One faucet with its own reverse osmosis system, for the water you drink, cook with and make coffee and ice from.
Dallas Water Questions
Where does Dallas get its tap water?
From six reservoirs: Ray Hubbard, Tawakoni and Fork feed the East Side plant, and Ray Roberts, Lewisville and Grapevine feed the Elm Fork and Bachman plants by way of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River.
Do I need a water softener in Dallas?
Dallas water runs 120 to 155 mg/L, about 7 to 9 grains, which the city itself calls hard. Hardness is a nuisance rather than a health concern according to USGS, so it comes down to scale and soap. Your in-home test shows where your house lands.
Why does Dallas use chloramine instead of chlorine?
Dallas Water Utilities says it uses chloramine "to protect the health and safety of our citizens." The EPA notes chloramines provide longer-lasting disinfection as water moves through pipes.
Is there manganese in Dallas water?
Very little. The 2025 average was 2.27 parts per billion, with a high of 6.80, while the EPA's secondary guideline is 50 parts per billion.
