Water Softeners and Filtration in Fort Worth, TX

Fort Worth treats water for its own homes and sells it to neighbors such as Keller and Southlake. The city says that water is usually hard enough to coat the inside of metal pipes and fixtures. Here is what its 2025 numbers show and what they mean inside a house.

What's in Fort Worth Water

The Fort Worth Water Department publishes its figures on its water quality page. Two of them are below: the minerals that make water hard and the disinfectant added in treatment.

  • Hardness

    6 to 9grains per gallon

108 to 150 ppm, 2025 water quality page

  • Chloramines

    3.3ppm average

    Range 0.93 to 4.7 ppm, 2025

Seven Sources, Mostly Lakes

Fort Worth draws on Lake Worth, Eagle Mountain Lake, Lake Bridgeport, Richland Chambers Reservoir, Cedar Creek Reservoir, Benbrook Lake and the Clear Fork of the Trinity River. The city owns Lake Worth, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for Benbrook, and the Tarrant Regional Water District owns and operates the other four lakes.

Calcium, Magnesium and Dissolved Solids

Calcium runs 37.6 to 48.1 ppm and magnesium 3.45 to 7.35 ppm, the two minerals behind hardness. Total dissolved solids measure 182 to 244 ppm, under the EPA's secondary guideline of 500. At 6 to 9 grains, Fort Worth straddles the line the Water Quality Association draws at 7 grains, where water becomes hard.

Chloramines: Chlorine Plus Ammonia

Fort Worth adds monochloramines, chlorine combined with ammonia, to protect against harmful bacteria. Per the EPA, chloramine disinfection holds up longer on the way through the distribution system, and an archived EPA page adds that they do not boil off and do not rapidly dissipate when water sits.

The Only Way to Know Your Number

Those are citywide ranges from Fort Worth's own sampling, not readings from your faucet. We measure iron, sediment, chlorine and hardness right at your tap, free for Fort Worth homes, and recommend from what we find.

Common questions

Fort Worth Water Questions

Where does Fort Worth tap water come from?

From seven surface sources: Lake Worth, Eagle Mountain Lake, Lake Bridgeport, Richland Chambers Reservoir, Cedar Creek Reservoir, Benbrook Lake and the Clear Fork of the Trinity River.

Is Fort Worth water hard?

Fort Worth reports 6 to 9 grains per gallon and says its water is usually hard enough to coat metal pipes and fixtures. By the USGS bands, that range starts at moderately hard and climbs into hard.

Why does Fort Worth water sometimes taste earthy or musty?

Southlake, which buys all its water from Fort Worth, explains in its 2025 report that these taste and odor changes come from naturally occurring algae growth in a source such as Eagle Mountain Lake.

Fort Worth's chloramine readings went up to 4.7 ppm. Is that over the limit?

The disinfectant limit (MRDL) Fort Worth reports is 4 ppm, and TCEQ bases compliance on a running annual average of all distribution samples, not single readings. Fort Worth's 2025 average was 3.3 ppm.
